Etymology
According to Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary, of babbling origin similar to ма́ма (máma, “mom”), на́на (nána, “aunty, female relative”). No exact cognates outside of Balkan Slavic (Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbo-Croatian), thus, possibly a neologism. Formally, may result from a reduplication of Proto-Indo-European *meh₂- (“to mature, to ripen”) (whence perhaps Proto-Celtic *makʷos (“son”)).
