Borrowed from Carpathian Rusyn о́зеро (ózero) or earlier Old Ruthenian о́зеро (ózero), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *ezero. Displaced Old Slovak jazaro, jazero, jezaro, jezero, which would have likely yielded *єжеро (*ježero) or *єзеро (*jezero), the latter of which is attested in an older folk song as єзери (jezeri).
