Erzya
Etymology
From Proto-Mordvinic *ratas(-kV), borrowed from Proto-Baltic *radas (whence Latvian rads (“relative”)). The Latvian noun rads has nominal parallels in the Slavic languages, such as Old East Slavic родъ (rodŭ) (whence Russian род (rod)), Czech rod, Polish ród (“bloodline”) etc.[1]
The same Balto-Slavic stem was borrowed into Mordvinic later in another form in the following way: Erzya раштамс (raštams, “to reproduce, breed”) < Old East Slavic раждати (raždati, “to give birth”) < Old East Slavic родити (roditi) (whence Russian родить (roditʹ)).
