Of unclear origin. Presumed by J. J. Mikkola to be borrowed from Old Norse jarðhús (“underground room”). Compare jǫrð (“earth, modern Icelandic jörð”) and hús (“house”). This derivation has however been doubted on phonetic and semantic grounds.
