Of unclear origin. Presumed by J. J. Mikkola to be borrowed from Old Norse jarðhús (underground room).[1][2] Compare jǫrð (earth, modern Icelandic jörð) and hús (house). This derivation has however been doubted on phonetic[3] and semantic[4] grounds.
