The origin is uncertain. Probably from Proto-Indo-European *Hiǵʰ-l- by metathesis. Cognates include Sanskrit ईहते (īhate, “to strive for, desire”), Avestan 𐬌𐬰𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬌𐬙𐬌 (iziieⁱti, “to desire”), 𐬀𐬉𐬰𐬀𐬵 (aēzah, “desire”), Ancient Greek ἰχαίνω (ikhaínō, “to crave”). Influenced by բաղձ (bałj).
