The root is *ճմ- (*čm-), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *gem- (“to seize, take; to squeeze, press”) and cognate with Ancient Greek γέντο (génto, “he grasped”), Proto-Slavic *žęti (“to squeeze, press”) (Russian жать (žatʹ), жму (žmu)), Middle Irish gemel (“fetter”), Old Norse kumla (“to squeeze”). Related to ճմռել (čmṙel), ճմռթել (čmṙtʻel).

1. (transitive) to squeeze, to press

   ճմլել զպտուղս ― čmlel zptułs ― to bruise fruits

2. (transitive, figuratively) to trample on, to grind down, to oppress, to crush, to vex, to molest

   ճմլել զսիրտ ― čmlel zsirt ― to grieve, to oppress

   ճմլել զսիրտ ի գորով ― čmlel zsirt i gorov ― to affect, to melt, to move to pity

   ո՞չ իսկ սիրտք մեր ճմլէին ի մեզ ― o^?čʻ isk sirtkʻ mer čmlēin i mez ― did not our hearts burn within us?
