Of uncertain origin. Probably related to Hittite (kar-za, kar-za-na-aš, “a weaver's tool for making thread”). Comparisons to Ancient Greek κάρταλλος (kártallos, “a basket with a pointed bottom”) and Latin crātis (“wickerwork”) have also been made.
