Sanskrit

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *sr̥gás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sr̥gás, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *sl̥ǵ-ós, from *selǵ- (to let go, send), possibly related to सृग (sṛgá) and English sulk. The final ka in sṛká can be obtained if one hypothesizes an athematic PIE noun *sl̥ǵ that would yield सृक् (sṛk) due to devoicing of final consonants, followed by its reanalysis as a thematic noun to give sṛká. However, given that Proto-Indo-European yields Sanskrit j instead of g, an innovation can be considered, or a borrowing from some centum branch of Indo-European.

Monier-Williams suggests a derivation from the Sanskrit roots which in turn derive from PIE *selǵ: सृ (sṛ, to run, flow, speed, glide) or सृज् (sṛj, to throw, cast, eject), and also proposes a derivation from an obsolete root सृक् (sṛk, to be pointed).
