From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɡraːnꟲ² (“lazy”), from Old Chinese 懶 (OC *raːnʔ, “lazy”).[1] Cognate with Northern Thai ᨣᩕ᩶ᩣ᩠ᨶ, Khün ᨤ᩶ᩣ᩠ᨶ, Lao ຄ້ານ (khān), Lü ᦆᦱᧃᧉ (xaan²), Shan ၶၢၼ်ႉ (khâ̰an), Tai Nüa ᥑᥣᥢᥳ (xȧan).
