From ภาษา (paa-sǎa, “language”) + พ่อขุน (pɔ̂ɔ-kǔn, “high king”); literally "high kings' language", referring to the language used during the time of the Sukhothai Kingdom (13th century), whose monarchs were titled พ่อขุน (pɔ̂ɔ-kǔn, “high king”). Such language is now considered impolite.
