From Proto-Kartvelian *pakl-. Cognate with Old Georgian ფა(ნ)ქლი (pa(n)kli, “mange, boil”) and Svan ფაქა̈რ (pakär, “pus, sore, ulcer”).[1][2] Typologically, compare Old Armenian ծաղիկ (całik), Proto-Turkic *čeček, Mandarin 天花 (tiānhuā) and Latin variola for the sense development.
