From a previous form ϝίτυς (wítus), from Proto-Hellenic *wítus, that proves a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁y- (“to twist, to twine”). Cognate with Latin vitus (“felloe”), Ancient Greek ἰτέα (itéa, “willow”), ἶρις (îris, “rainbow”), οἶσος (oîsos, “withy”), Albanian vithe.
