From Proto-Hellenic *ustérā, from Proto-Indo-European *udtéreh₂. Originally feminine form of the adjective ὕστερος (hústeros) with the original sense "outer", from Proto-Indo-European *údteros (“higher, outer”), perhaps through a construction such as ὑστέρα μήτρᾱ (hustéra mḗtrā), originally denoting "the upper/protruding part" and hence "the belly". For cognates with the same root and a different suffix – i.e. from Proto-Indo-European *úderos (“stomach”) – see Sanskrit उदर (udara, “belly”) and Latin uterus (“womb”). Probably related to ὕδερος (húderos, “dropsy”).
