The formation is like in πυκινός (pukinós) but the basis is unknown. Some connect this word with ῥάδαμνος (rhádamnos, “branch, twig”), while Lobeck also connects ῥαδές (rhadés, “bent to both sides”). Beekes confront the adjective with ῥοδανός (rhodanós, “wavering, flickering”) and concludes that both words are from Pre-Greek, in view of the variation ῥαδ-/ῥοδ- (rhad-/rhod-).
