三樂

1. three pleasures

   • 君子有三樂，而王天下不與存焉。父母俱存，兄弟無故，一樂也。仰不愧於天，俯不怍於人，二樂也。得天下英才而教育之，三樂也。 [Classical Chinese, trad.]

     From: Mencius, c. 4^th century BCE

     Jūnzǐ yǒu sānlè, ér wáng tiānxià bù yǔ cún yān. Fùmǔ jù cún, xiōngdì wúgù, yī lè yě. Yǎng bùkuì yú tiān, fǔ bù zuò yú rén, èr lè yě. Dé tiānxià yīngcái ér jiàoyù zhī, sānlè yě.

     There are three things a gentleman enjoys, and ruling the world with benevolence is not among them. It is the first pleasure to have parents alive and no harm to brothers; the second pleasure is to raise one's head to be worthy of heaven and bow one's head to be worthy of man; to obtain outstanding talents from the world and to teach and nurture them is the third pleasure.

     Dài suǒ lánlǚ, rú cǎo cāo sì, wán qí sānlè, shǒu cháng dài zhōng.

     They used ropes as belts, wore ragged clothes, ate weeds, held hoes and shovels, enjoyed the three pleasures of life, and maintained their daily poverty while waiting for the end of life.

     Yì zhě sānyào, sǔn zhě sānyào: yào jiélǐ yuè, yào dàorén zhī shàn, yào duō xián yǒu, yì yǐ; yào jiāo lè, yào yìyóu, yào yànlè, sǔn yǐ.

     There are three beneficial interests and three harmful interests. It is beneficial to be fond of etiquette and music, to praise the merits of others, and to make good friends; it is harmful to be fond of debauchery, unbridled wandering, and eating and drinking.
