Etymology

First attested in the Dongmun yuhae (同文類解 / 동문유해), 1748, as Early Modern Korean 몽이 (Yale: mwongi). Attested somewhat later in the eighteenth century as 모이 (moi). From reconstructed Middle Korean *모ᅀᅵ〮 (Yale: *mwòzí), from pre-Middle Korean *mwòsí. The majority of modern dialects still preserve the ancestral form 모시 (mosi).

While not directly attested in Middle Korean, the Middle Korean verb 모ᅀᅵ〮다〮 (Yale: mwòzí-tá, “to graze cattle”) is clearly related. The ancestral word appears to have meant "feed; fodder" in general, not specific either to cattle or poultry. The semantics narrowed to "feed for poultry" in most modern dialects, but to "cattle" in Middle Korean and also in the modern Yukjin dialect, where 모시 (mosi) means "fodder for cattle".[1]
