First attested in the Byeogon sinbang (辟瘟新方 / 벽온신방), 1653, as Early Modern Korean 믉다 (Yale: mulkta). Derived from 믈 (meul, “water”) (> modern 물 (mul)) + ㄱ (g, epenthesis) + —다 (-da). Ablaut form: 맑다 (makda, “clear”). Compare 붉다 (bukda, “red”) < 불 (bul, “fire”).
