Korean

Etymology

First attested in the Bullyu dugongbu si eonhae (分類杜工部詩諺解 / 분류두공부시언해), 1481, as Middle Korean 비슥ᄒᆞ다 (Yale: pisuk-hota). In the standard Seoul dialect, the final consonant of the root shifted in the late nineteenth century, perhaps due to the influence of Middle Korean 이셧ᄒᆞ다 (Yale: isyes-hota), which was synonymous. The original form is preserved in many dialects.

Equivalent to 비슷 (biseut, root) +‎ 하다 (-hada).
