Sino-Korean word from 三陟, from 三 (“three”) + 陟 (“advance”). Coined by Korean monarch Gyeongdeok of Silla as part of the toponymic Sinicization reform of 757. This was presumably an adaptation of 실직 (悉直, Siljik), the ancient Old Korean name for the town.
