Etymology

From Block +‎ Partei. Refers to the so-called Antifascist-Democratic Bloc which all legalized parties in the Soviet zone of occupation had to join immediately after their foundation in 1945. Accordingly, the ruling SED was strictly a Blockpartei too, but the term was soon restricted to the other bloc members.
