From Middle High German tuft, from Old High German duft, thuft, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewbʰ- (to whisk, be obscured) (DWDS); cognate with Danish duft (fragrance) and possibly Ancient Greek τῠφλός (tuphlós, blind).[1] The Middle High German t- is an irregular hardening (compare tausend) that was undone in modern German.
