From Low German Futtje. Possibly from futt (“at once, directly”), cognate of High German fort (cf. sofort). The form Förtchen is probably based on this interpretation, but it is also plausible because the pastries are baked in batches and then directly eaten. Alternatively it could be related with Dutch vod (“rag, lap, flabby thing”). Compare especially obsolete Dutch vadde (“flabby biscuit/scone”).
