kauha- + -nen. There are multiple possible origins, including kauha (“scoop, ladle”) (in reference to a shape of e.g. a body of water) and the onomatopoeic verb kauhaa (in reference to rushing water), both of which would have been adopted from toponyms. A third possible origin is a byname Kauha, Kauhu (~ kauhea (“terrible”), kauhu; perhaps originally "pale").[1]
