Dutch
Etymology
Potentially attested as Mannaricio around 300, attested with certainty as maldericke in 997. Etymology uncertain. The identification of Maurik with Mannaricio is doubtful. Two etymologies have been proposed for the (controversial) oldest attestation: a derivation from Proto-Germanic *Mannarîk (a personal name) with collectivising suffix *-ja- and a derivation from an unidentified prehistoric name with the suffix *-ikja-. The newer attestations are derived either from Proto-Celtic *Maleriacum (literally “settlement belonging to Malerius”) or Proto-Germanic *Maldarîk (a personal name) with collectivising suffix *-ja-.
