From Middle High German niunouge, from Old High German niunouga (ca. 900). Equivalent to neun (“nine”) + Auge (“eye”), after the orifices near the head.
Compare Dutch negenoog, Danish niøje, Norwegian Nynorsk niauge, Swedish nejonöga. All of these are attested much later and thus probably from German (or Middle Low German).
