Finnish
Etymology
Probably shortened from the name Närvijoki, Närpijoki, from earlier *Närväjoki, of unknown origin. Other theories include derivation from a personal byname/nickname närvä meaning "stingy" (akin to närppiä) + pää, meaning "head", but here specifically "peninsula" (however, the phonetic development into the form Närpiö appears difficult to explain) and derivation from an anthroponym *Närppi; villages called Närppi can be found in southwestern Finland[1] (it may derive from närppiä as well as a byname/nickname).
