According to Martirosyan, from Proto-Armenian *ałǰ-i, from *alg-i, by metathesis from *agl-i, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂(e)gʰl-i, a frozen locative of *h₂(e)gʰl- (“darkness, fog, mist”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀχλύς (akhlús, “mist; darkness”) and Old Prussian aglo (“rain”).
