Proto-Finnic

Etymology

Unclear. Two etymologies have been suggested:

  • From *joodak (to drink) +‎ *-stak, then perhaps suggesting that the verb's original meaning was "to flow". *-stak (*-ksë-) is presupposed to be a reflexive verb suffix, but this has no known parallels (the third-person reflexive *-ksën, from present marker *-k- + third-person possessive affix *-sën (*-hën), is only found in Eastern Finnish, Karelian, Veps and possibly Estonian), and the only other parallel proposed, *cööstäk, is likely not reflexive at all.
  • Cognate to Hungarian ívik (to spawn), from Proto-Uralic *jokse-, with irregular vowel length; this comparison is semantically dubious.

Verb

*joostak (stem *jooksë-)

  1. to run, to flow
