From Pre-Germanic *gʰowro-s, probably from a suffixed form of Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰewH- (“to call on, invoke”) or from *gʰewro-. Cognate with Old Irish gúre (“pain, pang”), Sanskrit घोर (ghora, “terrible”), Proto-Slavic *žuriti (“to rage”), and Lithuanian žiaurùs.[1]
