Proto-Slavic
Etymology
Often derived from Proto-Indo-European *gʰewro- and thus cognate with Sanskrit घोर (ghorá, “terrible, terrifying”), Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌿𐍂𐍃 (gaurs, “sad”), 𐌲𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌾𐌰𐌽 (gaurjan), Old High German gōrag, Old Irish gúrе.
An alternative possibility is derivation from Proto-Indo-European *ǵewH- (“force, drive”) and thus cognate with Sanskrit जू (jū, “drive, impel, hurry”), Persian زود (zud, “quick, rapid”), and perhaps Old Norse keyra (“drive”).
Verb
*žurìti[1][2]
