Indo-European cognates include Latin scūtum (shield) from *skoytom; and Old Irish scíath (shield), Welsh ysgwyd (shield), Breton skoed (Old Breton skoit), all from Proto-Celtic *skeitos, from *skeytos.

Comparison with Proto-Germanic *skelduz (shield) is doubtful.
