Fossilized n-participle of *dьrati (to tear) +‎ *-nъ, from Proto-Indo-European *der- (to tear). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *turnaz (bitter; anger, wrath) and akin to Sanskrit दीर्ण (dīrṇa, scattered), Sanskrit दृणाति (dṛṇāti, to tear, to burst).
