Akin to Ancient Greek κόπανος m (kópanos, bat), κόπανον n (kópanon, vessel for braying), whence comes the Late Balkan Slavic loanword копанъ (kopanŭ, bat for laundry; poultry leg) encountered in Bulgarian and Macedonian.
