From Proto-Balto-Slavic *tráudas, from Proto-Indo-European *trewd- (to squeeze; push; press). Cognate with Latvian trauds, Lithuanian triū̃sas (work, effort, pains), Proto-Germanic *þrautaz, *þrautą (threat, affliction).
