Formed as *vodьnъ (“watery”) + *-ikъ or equivalently *voda (“water”) + *-ьnikъ. Some daughter languages make distinction between male and female water spirits, in which case *vodьnikъ m refers specifically to the male spirit, while *vodьnica f refers to the female one.
