Usage

This template may be used in "References" and "Further reading" sections and on talk pages to format quotations from Joseph Bosworth's work An Anglo-Saxon Dictionary (main volume, 1882; supplement, 1921; and online version, 2014). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work:

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

Print version (1882–1921)
  • |part=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the Supplement (1921), specify |part=Supp. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the main volume (1882).
  • |1=, |chapter=, or |entry=
    • If citing a part of the work other than a dictionary entry, use |1= or |chapter= to specify the name of the chapter, for example, |chapter=Preliminary Notice.
    • If citing a dictionary entry, the entry or headword in the work to be cited. If this parameter is omitted, the template uses the name of the Wiktionary entry.
  • |3= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic or lowercase Roman numerals, as the case may be. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11 or |pages=x–xi.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the print version of the work. If the parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the online version (2014).
  • |column= or |columns= – the column number(s) to be quoted from in Arabic numerals, either |column=1 or |column=2. When referring to a passage that spans both columns, either omit this parameter or use an en dash like this: |columns=1–2.
Online version (2014)
  • |1= or |entry= – the entry or headword in the work to be cited. If this parameter is omitted, the template uses the name of the Wiktionary entry.
  • |id=mandatory in some cases: the identification code at the end of the URL of the entry to be cited. For example, if the URL is https://bosworthtoller.com/1, specify |id=1. This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.
Both versions
  • |2=, |pos=, or |part of speech= – the part of speech of the entry. By default, the template italicizes the value assigned to the parameter and adds a full stop (period) to the end. To turn off the default formatting for the purpose of specifying a different formatting using wikitext markup and templates, specify |noformat=1 or |noformat=yes.
  • |subentry= – a term that appears as a subentry under an entry.
  • |subpos= – the part of speech of the subentry.
  • |4=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |nodot= – by default, the template adds a full stop (period) at the end of the citation. To suppress this punctuation, use |nodot=1 or |nodot=yes.
