Template:RQ:Pope Essay on Man

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Alexander Pope's work An Essay on Man (1st edition, 1733–1734, 4 volumes). It may be used to create a link to online versions of the work at Google Books:

• Epistle I (1733; archived at the Internet Archive).
• Epistle II (1733; archived at the Internet Archive).
• Epistle III (1733):
  • London edition (unfortunately missing pages at the end).
  • Dublin edition (use this edition if quoting from the pages missing in the London edition; archived at the Internet Archive).
• Epistle IV (1734; archived at the Internet Archive).

The template takes the following parameters:

• |1= or |epistle= – mandatory: the epistle (volume) number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, from |epistle=I through |epistle=IV.
• |location= – mandatory in some cases: the London edition of Epistle III is missing some pages at the end, and currently no other version of this edition is available online. If quoting from those missing pages, specify |location=Dublin to quote from the Dublin edition instead.
• |2= or |page=, or |pages= – mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
  • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
  • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).

This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.

• |url= – in most cases, the template will automatically link to the correct webpage if |page= or |pageref= is specified. However, if it does not, use this parameter to manually specify the URL to link to, like this: |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=HCIUAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA59.
• |line= or |lines= – the line number(s) of the passage quoted. If quoting a range of numbers, separate the first and last numbers of the range with an en dash.
• |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
• |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
• |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, “some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell”) rather than an actual use of it (for example, “we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset”), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
