Template:RQ:Pope Pastorals

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from three versions of Alexander Pope's work Pastorals, the one first published in Poetical Miscellanies: The Sixth Part (1st edition, 1709), and others published in The Works of Mr. Alexander Pope (1717, volume I) and The Works of Alexander Pope Esq. (1751, volume I); the versions differ slightly from each other. It may be used to create a link to online versions of the work at Google Books and the Internet Archive:

• 1st edition (1709).
• 1717 edition.
• 1751 edition.

The template takes the following parameters:

1st edition (1709)

• |pastoral= – the name of pastoral, either |pastoral=Spring, |pastoral=Summer, |pastoral=Autumn, or |pastoral=Winter. If this parameter is omitted, the template will attempt to determine the pastoral from the page number.
• |stanza= – the stanza number quoted from in Arabic numerals.
• |1= or |page=, or |pages= – mandatory: the page or range of pages quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
  • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=723–724.
  • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).

This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the pastoral quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.

• |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.

1717 and 1751 editions

• |year= – mandatory: if quoting from the 1717 or 1751 editions, specify |year=1717 or |year=1751 respectively.
• |chapter= or |title= – mandatory: the number or name of the pastoral quoted from as shown in the following table:

• |page= or |pages= – mandatory in some cases: the page or range of pages quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
  • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=11–12.
  • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
• |line= or |lines= – if quoting from the 1751 edition, the line number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of line numbers, separate the first and last numbers of the range with an en dash.

This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.

• |text= or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.

Both editions

• |footer= – a comment about the passage quoted.
• |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
