Parameters

It uses Module:ca-headword as a back-end, which supports a general set of parameters applicable to all Catalan headword-line templates. See there for more information. The following parameters are available for adjectives specifically:

Parameter Function
1 The feminine singular form, if different from the default (see below). In addition to specifying the feminine form, this allows two special values:
  • mf is used for adjectives which have identical forms in the masculine singular and feminine singular. This is includes adjectives ending in (which have different plural forms). But it does not include adjectives ending in -a, which are "regular".
  • ind or inv is used for indeclinable adjectives, which have just one form in both singular and plural.
pl Override the plural form for "mf" type adjectives, or the masculine plural form for adjectives with different masculine and feminine. This is needed only for a few adjectives like qualsevol and endogen where the regular plural form is not correct.
pl2 Override the second masculine plural form, if the adjective has two such forms.

If not specified, the feminine singular form is chosen by default based on some rules. These rules usually generate the correct form, but not always, so always check to see if it's correct. The following rules are used:

  1. If the word ends in any of the following, the feminine singular is the same as the masculine:
    1. -ble, e.g. probable (probable), feble (weak), invencible (invincible), doble (double), insoluble (insoluble), increïble (incredible);
    2. final-stressed -al and -ar in a multisyllabic word (e.g. local (local), regular (regular)); but not single-syllable words such as gal (Gallic), car (dear), clar (clear), nor words ending in unstressed -al or -ar, e.g. anòmal (anomalous), èuscar (Basque);
    3. -ant and -ent in a multisyllabic word, e.g. fragant (fragrant), reticent (reticent); but not single-syllable words such as sant (holy) and lent (slow); note that several words in -lent, e.g. violent (violent), fraudulent (fraudulent) (but not others such as insolent (insolent), silent (silent)) have feminine in -lenta and need this to be specified explicitly;
    4. , e.g. audaç (bold), feliç (happy); note that some words in (e.g. dolç (sweet), balbuç (stammering)) have feminine in -ça and need this to specified explicitly;
    5. -il but not -fil, e.g. fàcil (easy), pueril (childish) but not anglòfil (Anglophile), cinèfil (cinephile);
    6. -a, e.g. asteca (Aztec), ecologista (environmentalist).
  2. If the word ends in -o, change it to -a.
  3. If the word ends in -e, change it to -a, adjusting the final consonant as necessary to keep the same pronunciation.
  4. If the word ends in -au, -eu, -iu or -ou, replace the -u with -va.
  5. If the word ends in an accented vowel, remove the accent and add -na.
  6. If the word ends in an accented vowel followed by -s (so -ós, -ès etc), remove the accent and add -a. (Note: if -s changes to -ssa, the default will be incorrect, and needs to be overridden.)
  7. If the word ends in a final-stressed -at, -it, -ut, -ït or -ït in a multisyllabic word (e.g. amat (beloved), prohibit (prohibited), barbut (bearded), agraït (thankful), geniüt (bad-tempered), but not words ending in diphthongs such as beneit (blessed)), change the final -t to a -d and add -a.
  8. If the word ends in a vowel + one or more consonants + -i, put an accent on the vowel (preferring a grave accent if possible) and add -a. Hence llegendari (legendary) becomes llegendària, indonesi (Indonesian) becomes indonèsia, carolingi (Carolingian) becomes carolíngia, sobri (sober) becomes sòbria, herculi (Herculean) becomes hercúlia. As a special case, if the stressed vowel is a diphthong -ai-, -ei-, or -oi-, the first of the two vowels gets the accent, hence malaisi (Malaysian) becomes malàisia.
  9. Otherwise, add -a.

The plural is derived from the masculine or feminine form, based on the rules detailed at Template:ca-noun. The following additional rules exist, which derive the masculine plural form from the feminine singular:

  • If the feminine ends in -ssa, the masculine plural is created by replacing -ssa with -ssos.
  • If the feminine singular equals the masculine singular plus -na, then the masculine plural is formed by replacing -na with -ns.
  • If the masculine singular ends in -ig, then a second masculine plural is created by replacing the -ja of the feminine form with -jos.
  • If the feminine is specified as "mf" and the word ends in , then the masculine plural replaces it with -ços and the feminine plural with -ces.
