@Samiollah1357 @Saam-andar I saw the list of dialectal spellings at کدام and was brainstorming other ways to list dialectal spellings. I was thinking of embedding them in the pronunciation section like in the example. Unfortunately, I think this would be practically impossible to do automatically, but it would be possible to make a parameter in {{fa-IPA}}
that lets us embed anything under a dialect (so we can write the dialects manually) — BABR・talk 06:09, 19 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
- Hello @Babr. In my view, the way you have presented the pronunciations at User:Babr/Sandbox2 is certainly an improvement over the current way of representing dialectal pronunciations. I suppose if this were to become standard, the alternative forms section would solely list literary/poetic alternative forms, while dialectal spellings would be listed under the pronunciation section.
- On related notes:
- 1) Do you think it is possible to automate the detection of homophones?
- 2) Have you noticed that
{{fa-IPA}}
does not provide any transliterations for suffixes? e.g. see the "readings" at ـبد (-bod). Samiollah1357 (talk) 20:21, 19 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
- @Babr huh, I guess you beat me to it since I was thinking of doing a similar thing recently.
- It would be great to have this in fa-IPA, we can even have it display alternative forms for the main dialects too, e.g. the poetic forms mentioned by Samiollah (ـبذ under ـبد).
- I would like automation but I know that would be pretty hard do 'cause of unpredictably; maybe writing a list of dialectal phonetic changes to see what we're dealing would help. Also we have to decide what dialects to include.
- On a related note, I was thinking of doing a Persian version of T:dialect synonyms to replace T:fa-regional, do you think that'd be productive? Saam-andar (talk) 05:37, 22 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
- @Saam-andar I would like automation as well, but I wrote it off assuming it would be too much work. If we can figure out how much work it would be, maybe we could convince someone at wt:Grease pit to take up the task. But they would probably need to rewrite parts of fa-IPA (I don't think my coding skills are good enough to do that unfortunately).
- I think
{{dialect synonyms}}
would be a great addition when comparing regional dialects. Perhaps we can reduce {{fa-regional}}
to only being using for standard dialects? I still think it's helpful when the same word was borrowed from English, Russian and French separately (see семент (sement)). When comparing regional dialects though, {{fa-regional}}
kinda sucks, lol, so {{dialect synonyms}}
would be great.— BABR・talk 22:06, 24 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
