why are you adding the "dated" label to so many entries?

Almost none of the entries you're labeling as such are dated. mysteryroom (talk) 17:07, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Are you sure they aren't dated? I only added it to entries I was sure were dated. BirchTainer (talk) 17:10, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Pleae learn and familiarize yourself with the term "dated" - it is almost always reserved for words and expressions that disappeared or died out over a century ago, and not for words and expressions that have been frequently cited in the last ten years. Please stop adding nonsense to Wiktionary. mysteryroom (talk) 17:13, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Are there any specific ones you think are not dated?BirchTainer (talk) 17:13, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

You added the dated term to playa, which is an AAVE term still used pretty often. That is not a dated term. You're also adding "dated" to over a hundred other entries which have still been cited often in the last decade. mysteryroom (talk) 17:16, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I won't add dated to any more entries, I was using the definition of dated from Wiktionary:Obsolete and archaic terms BirchTainer (talk) 17:24, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you kindly. And if it's not too much to ask, I would kindly appreciate it if you could plz revert those changes. mysteryroom (talk) 17:26, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
So is the definition on Wiktionary:Obsolete and archaic terms inaccurate? BirchTainer (talk) 17:32, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
It is accurate. But you're adding dated to terms that are still in fairly widespread use online and in the day-to-day world. mysteryroom (talk) 17:38, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Isn't that what it's for? It's terms that are still in occasional use but are now unfashionable or only used by older people BirchTainer (talk) 17:44, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
The definition of "dated" you're using is consistent with the one presented at Appendix:Glossary#dated. But I still think you're applying it in an excessively broad manner. Lolrandom, a term that emerged in the mid-2010s, isn't "dated" by any reasonable metric. It's cheugy. It carries a whiff of 10 years ago, like girlboss, but it hasn't fallen out of use, and it won't make one sound totally out-of-touch.
I realize that this is an imprecise, subjective standard, but 20 years ago is my personal starting point for judging whether a term should be described as "dated." I think blawg and blawger are closer to the mark in that sense. There aren't as many bloggers as there were in the early-to-mid 2000s, and "blawging" was always a niche term with limited usage. Using either term in 2024 could definitely make one sound as if they're stuck in 2004. But the cake is a lie? That's not "dated." Portal is still a popular game even though it came out in 2007.
Bifictional is an example of term from the early 2000s that I definitely consider "dated." Not only the word but the concept itself has fallen out of favour. Fandom culture has changed in the last 25 years. There isn't much division between readers of those fanfic genres nowadays. WordyAndNerdy (talk) 07:30, 20 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the explanation! I'll keep that in mind for future use. I would use a 15 year rule personally (especially in modern times, when words go out of date faster) but I won't add dated to things that have been dead for only 15 years. BirchTainer (talk) 08:34, 20 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
