Welcome

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Thanks

And keep up the good work (I assume it is good, anyway, but I know nothing about Welsh) --Daleusher (talk) 13:25, 9 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Daleusher: You're welcome! I'm not sure what you're thanking me for, though! – Guitarmankev1 (talk) 14:24, 9 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
For generally being here, and having reasonably good humour. --Daleusher (talk) 19:54, 9 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
I appreciate that! Good humor is important, I think. It's nice to see that you're still here as well :) – Guitarmankev1 (talk) 23:06, 9 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Bringing back ƿynn entries

Dear Guitarmankev1, hello, I'm sorry for bothering you, there was a vote to remove all ƿynn entries and you voted against option 1 - Wiktionary:Votes/2020-09/Removing_Old_English_entries_with_wynns.

There is a discussion about it on the Wiktionary:Beer parlour/2020/November page - ]I only wanted to ask if there were a vote to bring the entries back, would you support it? Sorry for bothering again. Birdofadozentides (talk) 23:00, 23 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Birdofadozentides, echoing what a few other users have said, I'd be all for having wynn-entries for words which have attestable use, even if the entire entry only consists of an "alternative form of" template. – Guitarmankev1 (talk) 20:41, 24 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Guitarmankev1, I'm so sorry for answering so late, thank you! Though I wouldn't like the entries to consist only the template, they used to have more information. Birdofadozentides (talk) 13:10, 1 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

RE: "Lots of opportunity"

By "the same thing goes for Oriya (or), Chakma (ccp) and Rohingya (rhg)" I mean the English Wiktionary is very sparse on words of the aforementioned languages. -- Apisite (talk) 20:05, 24 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Ahh I see what you meant now. – Guitarmankev1 (talk) 20:53, 24 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Proposal for layout of Welsh entries

Hi, is there a forum where I can suggest a change to the way things are done on Welsh entries?

Bold move I know, but I've noticed that colours in Welsh all have the table of colours placed AFTER the table of mutations.

I think it would make more sense to have them the other way round, with the table of colours nested a level below the entry for the colour.

That way, pinc can avoid the implication that the table of colours has anything to do with the "finch" sense, which has a completely separate etymology from the colour. Arafsymudwr (talk)

Hello @Arafsymudwr! The order of headers in an entry is defined in WT:EL#List of headings, although there it does say "An order for these headings is recommended, but variations in that order are also allowable". So while it's not disallowed to place the "See also" colors table in between the definitions, it would be going against convention and some users likely may take issue with it.
But yes, there is a forum! There's actually multiple forums for different purposes, but the Beer Parlour (policy discussion) may be the best for this question. Feel free to head over there and post your concern, citing the pinc article. Even if the consensus may not be to reorder the headings, maybe the confusion could be cleared up other ways (e.g. footnote reference?), and discussion in those forums usually leads to some collaboratively good ideas!
And good work on all the other Welsh edits! I see your name pop up in my watchlist a lot, so it's not going unnoticed nor unappreciated :) – Guitarmankev1 (talk) 14:16, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sorry about the delay. Thanks, I'll check out the beer parlour and see what I can do! :) Arafsymudwr (talk) 01:26, 25 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
