From Proto-Finnic *ainaga, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *ainagaz, compare English any, Dutch enig, German einig, Icelandic einigur and Gothic 𐌰𐌹𐌽𐌰𐌷𐍃 (ainahs). Also posited to be a borrowing from Baltic, compare Latvian viens, Lithuanian vienas, Old Prussian ains. Cognates include Finnish ainoa, Votic ainõgo, Livonian āinagi, Ingrian ainava, Livvi aino, Ludian ainag and Veps ainag.
