From Ottoman Turkish آلچالمق (alçalmaḳ, “to become low, to stoop, to degrade one's self”),[1] from Ottoman Turkish آلچامق (alçamaḳ, “to treat as vile, to become low”), either from Proto-Turkic *aĺak (“foot of a mountain, low, below”)[2] or from alt (“bottom, base”) combined with the suffix -sa, where the /ts/ sound undergoes a phonetic change and turns into /t͡ʃ/,[3] from Proto-Turkic *ăl (“lower side, below, being below, lower”),[4] morphologically alça- + -l- + -tı.
