Unknown. Related to Ingrian adria, Karelian atrivo and possibly Veps ater. Sometimes theorized to be a borrowing from Proto-Norse (*ateRja-), from Proto-Germanic *ētezją, but there appears to be no evidence of the existence of such a Norse word (no known descendants).
