From Middle High German drinken, northern form of trinken, from Proto-Germanic *drinkaną.
As in the rhyming strong verbs sénken and sténken, the -vowel was generalized from the second and third persons singular (instead of expected as in fannen, schwammen, etc.). For the fact that nk as such does not prevent the lowering see Fank, Schank.
