Cognate with Latvian cȩpure (cap, hat, hood), and possibly from the same stem as Proto-Slavic *čepьcь (bonnet), Ancient Greek σκέπη (sképē, cover), σκέπᾰς (sképas, covering), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kep-.[1][2] Albanian kërpudhë (mushroom) and Old Armenian կոպ (kop, eyelid) have also been linked.
