  • Audio:(file)
  • Hyphenation: lö‧schen

Etymology 1

From Middle High German leschen, from Old High German lescan, from Proto-West Germanic *leskan, from Proto-Germanic *leskaną. Cognate with Dutch lessen.

Verb

löschen (weak, third-person singular present löscht, past tense löschte, past participle gelöscht, auxiliary haben)

  1. (transitive) to quench (fire, thirst, or lime)
    Durst löschento quench the thirst
    Feuer löschento extinguish the fire
  2. (transitive) to delete, to erase (remembrance, memory, data)
    Daten löschento erase data
Usage notes
  • The transitive verb löschen is weak, unlike the strong intransitive erlöschen (to go out; expire). Strong present forms du lischst, er lischt may occasionally be seen in the transitive verb, chiefly due to hypercorrection. The past forms of the transitive verb are virtually always weak.

Etymology 2

Borrowed from German Low German lössen, lossen, lessen, from Middle Low German lössen, which is derived from the cognate of German los (rid; free). Compare Dutch lossen. The form löschen is due to later association with etymology 1, unloaded goods being “deleted” from the ship’s cargo, or a delivery being crossed out in the order book. (See Deutsches Wörterbuch: “der kaufmann löscht einen schuldposten in seinem buche, durch ausstreichen”.[1]).

Verb

löschen (weak, third-person singular present löscht, past tense löschte, past participle gelöscht, auxiliary haben)

  1. (nautical) to unload (goods from a ship)
