Attested since 1640. From Danish myse (“squint”) and Norwegian myse (“squint”), ultimately related to Greek μύειν (mýein, “to close ones lips/eyes”) and μυωπία (myopía, “near-sightedness; myopia”) and English myopic. Compare myssla (“to whistle; to squeak”, archaic, dialectal).
