From Proto-Baltic *mīl-, from Proto-Indo-European *mēi-, *mi- (“gentle, soft, dear”), with an added l. There were apparently competing o and u stems (see Lithuanian forms, and also Latvian dialectal mīls), ultimately replaced by a yu-stem, which became Latvian mīļš.
